Protein is available from a variety of sources. The most popular source from which to manufacture protein powder, however, is milk. Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Fed: The Real Difference

Grain-fed cows, or conventionally fed dairy cows, are often kept in confined enclosures known as AFOs. The United States Department of Agriculture explains that AFOs, or Animal Feeding Operations, confine animals, feed, urine, manure, and production operations to a small piece of land. This leads to animals getting sick and consequently injected with antibiotics.

Some evidence, although inconclusive, suggests that some of these antibiotics are passed on to us through the food that we eat. In this case, that would be milk and protein powder. Although we are only talking about smaller quantities, it could contribute to antibiotic resistance over time. In addition, antibiotics can also cause a disturbance in the natural flora of the stomach.

This is too high, as the ideal ratio is suggested to be somewhere between 3:1 and 1:1. To put this into perspective, one should mention that the typical North-American diet has up to 20 times more omega-6 than omega-3, largely due to processed vegetable oils.

The study from Food Science & Nutrition also found that the ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 in grass-fed milk is .95, almost 1:1. In other words, grass-fed milk and thus grass-fed whey protein has a much more beneficial ratio.

Grass-fed whey protein benefits include a superior fatty acid profile, compared to regular whey. In addition to a favorable omega-6/omega-3 ratio, grass-fed whey protein also contains lower amounts of saturated fats. At the same time, it contains higher amounts of omega-3s and conjugated linoleic acids.

Both of these fatty acids come with several potential health benefits.

Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. They could also help battle stiffness and joint pain.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is thought to have a positive effect on cardiovascular health and may even help decrease body fat. There are also some indications that CLA, taken alone or in addition to whey protein, helps increase strength and improve lean tissue mass in people who work out.
